Last year, my husband celebrated his first Father’s Day as a dad. I struggled to come up with an idea for a meaningful gift that would be different from the other gifts he had received over the years for occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. He was given a beautiful handmade gift from our daughter courtesy of her daycare, so he was covered on the handprint hearts front. I thought long and hard and probably tried to ascribe the meaning I wanted in a gift rather than just thinking about a gift he would like.

So where did I pan out after all of this thought? The answer was simple. I selected a gift that I felt my husband could enjoy together with our daughter. I started by poring over lawn games to ensure our new green rooftop was a space that could be enjoyed by both dad and daughter together. I eventually settled on something easy enough for a toddler but fun for adults, too. The Williams-Sonoma Classic Lawn Bowling Game was the perfect gift that was equally suited for outdoor entertainment with friends and a game of skittles with little ones. It is suitable for players of all ages.

I also picked out a special book for my husband to read to our daughter at bedtime. Because I’m Your Dad by Ahmet Zappa had a quirky cool factor while also being something fun and silly that they could both enjoy.

Whether your idea of a gift that dad and kids can enjoy together is a family weekend getaway, a baseball game or a dinner at a special restaurant, gifting something to foster time together will undoubtedly be appreciated. I expect that I will approach each Father’s Day with the same simple goal in mind from now on.

Looking for inspiration? Though not a gift for dad, dress up the kids in a t-shirt that clearly shows their feelings like this “My dad rules the galaxy” t-shirt. The aforementioned lawn bowling game is perfect for summer fun in any backyard. Kids get to be the illustrator in Amazing Dad – An Illustrate Your Own Book for Kids. The original LEMON BALL baseball is perfectly suited for many outdoor ball games including: baseball, stickball, street ball, pepper, town ball, vintage base ball and more. Pair of Thieves sock sets designed for dad & kids blend bold designs with high performance elements. Because I’m Your Dad by Ahmet Zappa is a fun, whimsical and sentimental story for dads to enjoy with their kids. Jump on the adult coloring craze with Draw With Me, Dad! and color together as a nightly routine to connect and unwind before bed. Another fun lawn game that is suited to players of all ages is croquet. We opted for a classic croquet set, but there are plenty of fun options out there that also fit the bill.
